Chapter 7

Lois lay in his arms afterward. There was a dull ache in her heart, making it difficult for her to breathe.

She studied the nipple of the naked man. There was something wrong about it. She reached out, brushing her finger against it. It felt wrong. When she touched it again, she realized that it was scar tissue.

“This is a bullet wound,” she exclaimed.

He lay silent, watching her as she turned his arm over to investigate the other side. There was an eagle tattooed there. Its dark eye was an exit wound.

“What happened?”

“Firefight. In Afghanistan.”

“You were in the army?”

“For two years,”

Tears welled up within her. She tried to stave them off, but one escaped and trickled down her cheek.

“It’s alright,” he said. “I’m alright…now.”

“How did it happen?”

He sighed. “They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or maybe we were. I forget.” He pulled his arm away, examined it and then dropped it by his side.

“I met Al in the army.”

Lois didn’t press him on the subject. Instead, she flowed with him.

“Is that where you got into boxing?”

He nodded. “I was messed up.” He looked at her and grinned. “Well, you already knew that. Anyway, I met Al in a bar fight. We got out before the M.P.s arrived and became friends. He said that I was a loose cannon and it would get me killed someday. So he introduced me to boxing. When we got back last year, I came up here to train under his dad.”

“That day we went to the gym, and that bald guy started taunting you, it’s the first time I ever saw you refuse a fight. I knew you weren’t scared of him.”

“No, I’m not scared of him. I’m scared of me.” Seamus replied.

Lois was filled with a sweet melancholy when she returned to her room to dress. They had slipped into a different world for a few hours, and she wasn’t anxious to return.

She was slipping into her blouse when he came to her room. He leaned against the door jamb, his hands in the pockets of his jeans.

“I don’t think we should tell anyone…yet,” she said.

He nodded, his eyes on the floor.

“It’s not that I don’t want them to know, it’s just—it’s complicated.”

“Yeah.”

She came to him and he wrapped his arms around her.

“I suppose you’re right. I don’t know what Dad will think,” he said.

“I don’t think Mom would mind. She’s pretty liberal about everything. But, Mabel... Mabel won’t understand.”

“She’ll get over it.”

“I don’t know. Let’s just keep it quiet for a while.”

“Alright.” He began to bend toward her, lips parted.

The front door slammed.

“Lois! Lois don’t tell me you’re in bed!” Mabel called up the stairs.

He kissed her gently. Then returned to his room. Lois hurried down the stairs.

“I’m awake. Did you have fun?”

“I did! The show was awesome! Did Seamus get back yet?”

“I think he’s in his room.”

“I was so bummed when he said he had some chores to do today. I can’t wait to tell him about the show.
